What is Public Relations?

One thing that you will frequently hear when asking about Public Relations is, "It is not an easy profession to define."

In 2012 the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) decided that "Public Relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics."

A few examples of Public Relations:

  • Media Relations-writing press releases and speeches

  • Social Media Management-writing posts, responding to comments

  • Community Relations-public outreach and events

  • Customer Relations-seeking the thoughts and opinions of the consumers

  • Crisis Management-handling situations that could damage a company's reputation and result in financial loss

  • Coordinating events

  • Coordinating media appearances

Check out the PR Toolkit podcast. This is a weekly (five minutes or less) podcast that shares tips for small businesses owners and solopreneurs on how to incorporate Public Relations into their business.
